Horror games have been a staple in pop culture especially since many of these popular games have gotten onscreen treatment. The year 2015 was a success for this specific market even if many horror game fans were left disappointed with the cancellation of Silent Hill. But game developers are stepping things up this year by developing even more high-quality video games that will both scare and challenge gamers at the same time.
So take a look at the most highly anticipated horror games that are coming out this year brought to you by ExploreTalent:
1. Friday the 13th (Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC)
One of the biggest games set to release this year features one of the most iconic movie killers of all time: Jason Voorhees. Based on the trailer released, the graphics look amazing and the gameplay sounds like it is going to appeal to numerous people. It involves one player who controls Jason while the others play his victims in a classic hide-and-seek game. What makes it both challenging and fun at the same time is the fact that the whole game is set in a large scale environment and whoever manages to stay alive the longest wins the round.
2. We Happy Few (PC, Xbox One)
Release date: June 2016
We Happy Few has an interesting plot to back the whole game up. Citizens of a town called Wellington Wells are forced to take a drug called Joy, which controls their thoughts and makes them perceive the world as a happy place. The main objective of the player is to escape without being caught. What makes this game so impressive is that it was independently released and crowd-funded by Kickstarter. It was able to generate as much as $266,163 from more than 7,000 donors. While We Happy Few isn’t exactly a horror game (leans more on the psychological thriller genre), it still does deliver an eerie atmosphere to be classified as one.
3. Layers of Fear (Xbox One, PC)
Release date: TBA
Layers of Fear is a first-person psychological horror game that tells the story of a disturbed painter who is on a mission to finish his painting. As a result of his obsession, he becomes more and more mentally unstable and resorts to alcohol, which alters his thinking. The player’s job is to unravel the mystery of the main character’s own insanity. This game was well received by critics, who praised the developers for their artistic style and unique take on the genre.
4. Routine (PC)
Release date: TBA
Space-themed horror games have gotten momentum since Dead Space was released, and it has only increased in popularity over the years. So when Routine was announced, many were excited about it. The game is an artistic take to what the people of the eighties saw what our future would look like, with the player discovering the mystery behind a missing crew aboard the Lunar Research Station. To add to the already intense atmosphere, players will not be given weapons to fight back against whatever haunts the environment.
5. Perception (PC)
Release date: June 2016
Both Dead Space and Bioshock were iconic video games that garnered worldwide attention. The makers behind these games have officially teamed up to create Deep End Games, and it has quickly created buzz around the gaming community. Their first project is Perception, which is dubbed as a “fresh take on the haunted house horror” by PC Gamer. The company is currently taking pre-orders, which will help them release their Kickstarter goal to make the game available for both Xbox One and Playstation 4.
6. Outlast 2 (PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One)
Release date: Fall 2016
The first Outlast game was released back in 2013 to rave reviews and is easily one of the best survival horror games in the market for its plot and gameplay. It was mostly praised for combining found footage elements to the whole game. The first game followed Miles Upshur, an investigative journalist who finds himself in a dilapidated asylum filled with dangerous and homicidal patients.
The sequel, on the other hand, will involve an entirely different plot with a different journalist. Players will get to control the main character who investigates a murder in the countryside along with his wife, but after their helicopter crashes, his wife goes missing and he finds himself surrounded with dangerous psychopaths.
